dandelion - spring allergiesSpring’s back, so once again, allergies have arrived and are just as aggravating as ever. Last week, our blog covered several different techniques you can practice to prevent, or at least, minimize allergy symptoms. This week, we’re going to help relate spring allergies to the services our center provides.

Of the 50 million people affected by allergies, only a portion of them experience what we call spring allergies. Other allergies include:

  • Dusts
  • Pets
  • Drugs
  • Insects
  • Molds

Patients suffering from life-threatening allergic reactions should immediately go to the emergency room instead of our center. However, for the majority of non-life-threatening conditions, our center has the resources to administer different medications to alleviate allergy symptoms.

For indoor allergies and spring allergies, our board-certified physicians may administer antihistamines to alleviate these syptoms. During the spring, certain chemicals like pollen, dust mites, pet dander and ragweed causes people to release histamines, which may lead to symptoms ranging from:

  • Itchy eyes
  • Runny nose
  • Develop hives
  • Stuffy nose

What antihistamines will then do is block these histamines from further developing, which will eventually eliminate these allergic symptoms. While there are antihistamines that can be purchased over-the-counter, they’re often not as effective as ones requiring a prescription. At AFC Urgent Care Saugus, our board-certified physicians can prescribe antihistamines to patients in need of these medications.

For patients suffering from chronic allergies, our physicians will refer them to a licensed allergist, who will be a more effective option for treatment. If you’re interested in taking advantage of our allergy services, visit us any day of the week – with no appointment necessary. We look forward to helping you get through allergy season allergy-free!
